Introduction
In order to utilize the rapidly growing databases, we developed HiGet, a new data retrieval system that can execute full text searches on various biological databases at very high speeds. In addition to full text search, the HiGet system contains data in XML format in order to provide field specific searches. Since the number of matched entries by a simple keyword search can be very large, a field specific search can be used to narrow down the results.
The HiGet system is constructed on the HiRDB, a commercial ORDBMS (Object-oriented Relational Database Management System) developed by Hitachi, Ltd. The HiGet system also utilizes multiple processors to reduce the total search time against large databases by splitting the databases into pieces and distributing the query to each processor.
